Bianca reports on leg one: VOR 2017/2018
WHERE IN THE WORLD: Alicante to Lisbon
Leg 1 complete!!!
Wow where do I start…. The atmosphere at the village was insane on the morning of the start of Leg 1, it was extremely overwhelming and felt like a dream, I couldn’t believe I was about to start the Volvo Ocean Race… this was really truly happening.
We docked out and headed for the start with clear tactics as to how we were going to approach the leg. As we approached the final mark it seemed like the spectator boats got a little too excited and wanted to get even closer to the action.
We were right up with the fleet and when we approached Gibraltar Strait we were amongst the pack heading through. We managed to hang on to the fleet and had some close racing with three of the other boats up until we rounded Porto Santo
Highlight: Gibraltar Straits
Low light: Wet soggy socks. I thought i’d take a bit of kiwi spirit with me for the first leg so opted to take my Sir Peter Black red socks with me. Turns out that they aren’t the most practical socks and I think for the following legs I might opt for my seal skins instead but you can’t blame a girl for trying.
Leg 2 to Cape Town starts on Sunday with an in port race on Friday. Bring on the madness.
