Antares III annouced as a finalist in the 2012 World Superyacht Awards

Having just completed her maiden voyage cruising the South Pacific Islands, Antares III, the 30m composite sloop built by New Zealand shipbuilders Yachting Developments, has been announced as a finalist in the 2012 World Superyacht Awards under the category of ‘Sailing Yachts, 30m-40m size range’.  Antares III was designed by Dixon Yacht Design and interior designed by Rhoades Young Ltd.
This was an outstanding project for the team at Yachting Developments who handed Antares III to the owner in May after an unheralded 400 days build time.

Endeavour JK4 Launched - Saturday 8th October 2011

Yachting Developments proudly launched the iconic J Boat Endeavour on Saturday 8th October 2011, the launching marks the completion of an extensive 18 month refit at Yachting Developments yard based in Hobsonville, Auckland.

Endeavour touched the water at 8am, onboard systems were commissioned and checked, the new mast was stepped at 11am, the boom was fitted at 1.00pm, Endeavour then moved to her berth at Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour on schedule at 2.30pm.

Absolute care has been taken throughout the refit to preserve as much of the vessel as practical while taking advantage of twenty first century sailing systems, enhanced performance and improved functionality.  The comprehensive refit includes removal and replacement of the complete weather deck including all deck equipment. Steel deck framing has also been relocated to accommodate the new load paths of the new deck layout.

There has been a long term philosophy of longevity and serviceability throughout the refit ensuring Endeavour will remain the historic Icon she is today for future generations.

Dykstra & Partners, Naval Architects, have been instrumental in the design of the new sail plan, deck layout, and structural engineering.

The main engine, generators, hydraulic systems, winches, electrical system, electronics, bow thruster and air conditioning have been replaced or upgraded.  The new carbon fibre mast was built by Southern Spars Auckland, the mast features carbon standing rigging.

Accommodation forward of the mast has been reconfigured by John Munford and Adam Lay, the new interior has been built in-house by Yachting Developments tradesmen.

The owner’s project management is by Jon Barrett Associates whom have had over 25 years experience in this role with Endeavour.

Yachting Developments Managing Director Ian Cook describes working on Endeavour as “an honor, she is something special, everyone involved has put their heart and soul into the refit, I think the care, and passion is very evident in the end result”.

After completion of sea trials Endeavour will tune up on Auckland harbor prior to being shipped in February to the northern hemisphere to compete in the 2012 J Class regattas timed to coincide with the Olympics.

Congratulations to Rob Hamilton for being awarded a Medallion for Excellence for his participation in the Cabinetmaking section of this year’s WorldSkills London 2011 competition and securing 10th place, a huge achievement for a NZ apprentice.

Rob, an employee at Yachting Developments, had to master a combination of traditional and contemporary techniques using hand tools such as chisels and mallets as well as modern tools such as electronic and even computerized woodworking equipment for the competition.

Mike Birdsall of BIA says “Rob performed with distinction at World Skills.  He is one of a very few whom has achieved a medal of excellence with a new expert.  He completed the project which few achieved and was judged by many to be a medal winner such were his efforts.  His cabinet was outstanding and Yachting Developments can be proud of his efforts.

The uniform looked fantastic and was easily the best promotion of sponsors!  Rob would like to take this opportunity to give a huge Thank You to all of his Sponsors who helped make this happen!
A special thanks to:  NZ Marine, Blum, Makita, Anzor, Harken, Mulcahy Engineering Ltd, Antares III, Adhesive Technologies and Yachting Developments.

Super yacht makes waves:
As seen in the Sunday Star Times (August 15th 2011), Yachting Developments has been awarded the KiaOraMai Awesome Service Award.  Ian Cook was presented the award for the fast build and excellent service provided whilst building super yacht Antares III.  As president of the Marine Industry Association, Cook says the award shows that Kiwi boatbuilders can win big contracts against overseas competition, by having confidence in their planning, and "getting support from staff and sub-contractors".

The owner's agent Patrick Yeoward said the timeframe was a factor in the project being awarded to Yachting Developments, rather than a northern hemisphere yard.

"Ian Cook ensured construction went like clockwork. Antares III was launched within 14 months and the quality has exceeded expectations. The level of client service is an example of why we would strongly recommend New Zealand, Ian, and his company to overseas interests."

Yachting Developments is proud to launch another 30m composite performance cruising sloop this week.

Yachting Developments has lived up to their reputation and produced a yacht that they can be proud of particularly considering the short build time of just over one year.
“YD69 has been a very enjoyable project, the team at Yachting Developments thrived on the challenge to build such a high quality custom superyacht in the timeframe requested by the client.” says Ian Cook, Yachting Developments Managing Director.

From the design board of naval architects Dixon Yacht Design the vessel is referred to as build number YD69, or by its project name “Meteor 100” but is now proudly named ‘Antares III’.

Built to comply with stringent Germanischer Lloyd and MCA classification requirements, the vessel is incredibly strong yet 25%-30% lighter than similar vessels built in Aluminum, this is achievable by the use of composites. The composite structure is post cure epoxy Eglass/Carbon/Kevlar incorporating high strength foam sandwich technology. The hull has a Kevlar outer skin giving increased impact resistance.

Blonde Teak interior as designed by Rhodes Young, was built in-house by Yachting Developments specialist tradesmen with a horizontal grain and is contrasted with wide Walnut planked floors. The yachts accommodation consists of an upper and lower saloon that are open to each other, two spacious guest cabins and a full beam Owners cabin with private access to the aft cockpit. Forward of the galley and crew mess is accommodation for four crew members.

Patrick Yeoward, owner representative and Project Manager describes the launch of Antares III: “They say that things run like a Swiss watch… Well that will have to be rephrased to a ‘Yachting Developments launch’.  One can expect things to run smoothly when following the 6P code, but when the weather turns and you cant see from one end of the boat to the the other, you could be forgiven to think it is all going to go wrong.  But no.  With increasing wind and driving rain that yacht was launched, on time.  The rig stepped, on time.  The boom loaded, on time.  And moored up, on time.  The look of relief on the faces on board certainly said it all.  All involved from the Owner’s side would like to congratulate and thank Ian Cook and his team for a job that was most certainly well done.”

The vessel and owner will in the coming months take advantage of the South Pacific build location with planned cruises throughout  New Zealand, Fiji and other pacific islands before heading to the northern hemisphere.

NZ MARINE TRADE CHALLENGE 2011
- THE YEAR OF THE CAT

The 2011 Marine Trades Challenge was held Saturday 12 March, at the MIA headquarters in Westhaven Marina, Auckland.

This year each team's challenge was to build a 'CAT'. Our boys unfortunately didn't do so well on the water and walked away very wet. However both team claimed trophies: Robert Hamilton, Bevan Newton, Chris Staub and Jordan Patching received the trophy for Best Built Boat and Andrew Goldfinch, Matthew Fan, Sean Shin and Brendan Driskel received the trophy for Innovation.
